CRIME
 

Most of the things that are crimes in the USA are also crimes in Thailand. We have indicated here, many crimes that are unique to the Country of Thailand.

Burglary – If you decide to buy a home, contact an alarm specialist and buy a heavy safe. If you buy a motorbike, also buy an anti-theft device. Night markets are popular for stealing motorbikes (no pesky guards).

King – It is a crime to say anything against the King. It is a crime to deface his image, which includes baht bank notes. It is a crime not to stand when the Thai National Anthem is played (especially theaters).

Nightclubs – It is a crime for anyone under the age of 18 to enter a bar. Also, police raids are not uncommon and urine samples are taken.

Petty Theft – Purse snatchers and pickpockets are active on Baht buses and unguarded beach chairs.

Reporting a Crime – Call one of the Emergency numbers listed in this FAQ. Go the Tourist Police and complete a police report. Your insurance Company might cover some of your losses with a police report.

Prostitution – Prostitution with adults, though unenforced, is illegal. Sex with minors under 18 is prosecuted. Accepting a fake I.D. as proof of age is not an acceptable defense in the Court. Ask to see the person’s ID (which may be borrowed from an older family member). The Thai year can be determined as follows:
ie, Assume a Thai year of 2533.
Then minus  – 543.
2533-543= 1990 (the birth year).
Current year is 2008 - 1990=18.

Signing Legal Documents – Do not sign any documents that are written in Thai unless you know what you are signing. Ask for assistance. Contact a Thai speaking friend or even a lawyer. What you sign could be routine, or an admission of guilt Or a promise to pay.

Visa  – It is a crime not to carry your Passport, however, it is not enforced if you carry a copy of your passport or a wallet-size facsimile.
