A Guide to Thai food
Thai foods see guiding it’s exquisite taste. Most
people know it to be HOT; as in spicy to the max. This is not necessarily
true of all foods. Generally speaking, Thai food comes in only three
varieties: rice, noodle and soups. The degree of hotness varies from bland to
volcanic. Most dishes can be adjusted at the time of cooking to suit the
eater. Every table has a set of condiments. These are not the usual salt and
pepper that Westerners are used to. They consist of dry red pepper, sugar,
sliced chilies in vinegar, and fish sauce (with or w/o chili). These are added
by the eater to ‘enhance’ the taste of the dish. Most Thai food
similar to Chinese food in that the ingredients are cut or chopped into
bite-sized pieces before cooking. The Thai use every variety of meats in
existence. Unlike some other Asian country they do not eat dog; in fact it is
actually against the law to serve it. Of course, the Thai have a way adopting and adapting items from other cultures in a
way few other countries can mach. You will find curries, salads, sushi, etc.
in many places served alongside traditional Thai dishes. The folks in the
Northeast, known as Issan (E-saan)
also eat thing like snake, lizard and all variety of insects. Things tend to
get a bit dry up there and food can become problematic hence the rather
‘different’ meats! Issan is somewhat
akin to the deep South of the USA;
things can be just a bit different there. Fish, chicken and pork surpass beef
in the preference of Thais and general availability. Most dishes can be made
with any of these meats all for the same price. Seafood is plentiful and
extremely inexpensive. A seafood version (ah-haan-talay)
is available for many dishes as well. Don’t drink the tap water
although it is safe enough to use for tooth brushing and the like. Insist on
bottled water and other beverages in restaurants. Outside of major
restaurants, try to avoid beverages with ice as well. You have no idea what
water was used to make that ice, especially- up-country, let just say that NO
ONE goes hungry. Food is everywhere. Enjoy!
A Guide to Western
Restaurants
In recent years, Western fast food
outlets (burgers, pizza, fried chicken, ice cream) have sprung up all over
the country. If the craving hits, you won’t be too far away from such
an establishment. Most of them even deliver! There are numerous Western
restaurants with prices from 100 baht to 3,000 baht. They include American,
French, Italian, German, Spanish, Mexican Swedish, Norwegian, Indian, etc,
etc. This section will be updated with the names of certain restaurants and the
special days they have buffet’s at bargain
prices.
