TRANSPORTATION

Baht Bus (aka song-taws)
Public Transportation in Pattaya is controlled by private entrepreneurs. They drive what are known as baht buses or song-taws. These are pick-up trucks with bench-seats in the truck bed. Foreigners are charged 10 baht and Thai are charged 5 baht. The law says 5 baht in town but since laws aren’t enforced drivers demand 10 baht from foreigners and are willing to fight to get it. Should you decide using a Baht Bus for your party’s exclusive use you can negotiate a price with the driver by the trip, by the hour or by the day.

Motorbike Taxi
These are the fastest, but not always the safest mode of  transportation. They will weave dangerously thru traffic and between standing vehicles –watch your knee caps! Drivers also frequently drive against the flow of traffic. Drivers can be identified by the brightly colored vest they must wear to operate as a commercial carrier. Having the vest gives no assurance whatsoever of competence. Prior to boarding a motorbike, scan the driver for outward appearances of alcohol or drug abuse. Check also that the drivers has a second helmet for you - the passenger. He will just as soon take you on a ride against the flow of traffic - if that is the faster option. Normaly 20-60 baht will get you anywhere in town but always settle on the price first. For ACTIVE DUTY U.S. forces, it is a violation of a GENERAL ORDER to use these motorcycle taxis or to drive a motorbike.

Mini Bus Service
There is now an A/C mini bus service in the greater Pattaya area that runs a defined route. Most people don’t use it as they run about every 30 minutes.

Minibus Service to Bangkok Victory Monument every 30 minutes. For anyone wishing to travel to Bangkok without paying for a taxi or trying to get bus at Pattaya Nua bus depot, here is an excellent option. Every 30 minutes an A/C minibus travels non-stop headed for the Victory Monument in Bangkok. Just go to the Pattaya central condo car park next to Wat Chaimongol Temple. Tickets can be purchased on the pavement out on Pattaya Tai. See the sign Wet & Wild A GO GO ! It only cost 150 baht one way, and the trip to Bangkok takes about 2 hours. The first bus leaves at 6 am and the last one leaves at 7:30pm.
