| Grandma was RIGHT! Broccoli is good for you despite what former Prez Bush (#41) says! Natural substances (sulfophane) found in broccoli were found to kill off the bacteria that cause stomach ulcers and contribute to stomach cancers. In case you haven’t heard, it is now almost universally accepted that stomach ulcers are caused (or at least worsened) by Heliobacter pylori bacteria that infect and invade the stomach lining. Indeed, the ‘excess acid’ that had previously been blamed for ulcers, does contribute to puncturing that lining and allowing the bacteria to take root. So, while the former remedies antacids and H2-histamine blockers are still useful, antibiotics have now been added to the regimen.
Stress is known to contribute to the increase of stomach acids, lowering stress in your life and eating more broccoli can prevent that gnawing pain in the gut. Practitioners of Chinese holistic medicine practice emphasize the SEVEN E’s of HEALTH: Eating, Exercise, Emotion, Environment, Education, Equality (balance) and Excretion. The emphasis is on balance and moderation. Good things can be bad if taken in excess; bad things tempered if taken in moderation. So, as we approach the traditional end-of-year party season: Enjoy eating that Holiday dinner (in moderation); eat more broccoli; keep active; don’t let the stresses of life and the holidays get to ya; keep your life in balance; and don’t forget that last one...
